Tongan National Youth Congress
Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) was established in 1991 as the National Body for the Youth of Tonga. The Patron is his Royal Highness Prince ‘Ulukalala Lavaka Ata. In 1991 Church Leaders Youth and Government Representative come together to form an independent body to deal with youth issues in Tonga a function that has always been done by Churches in the Kingdom. This was to address the issues of village youth fighting on religious belief. In 1996 UNESCO did a survey using focus group with TNYC to see what the issues are facing youth.
The Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC), is the key non-government organisation focusing on issues that affect Tonga’s youth.
TNYC is staffed by Tongans with local and overseas volunteers. TNYC has an administrative office in Nuku’alofa and local offices in each of the island groups: Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Ha’apai, Vava’u, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou. The local youth congresses coordinate youth activities for member village youth groups and provide community and social activities.
Oxfam has forged a close relationship with the Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) and is working with them to support rural communities in Vava’u, Tongatapu, Ha’apai, Eua, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou through virgin coconut oil production. The TNYC was established in 1991 as an umbrella body to represent and project the voice of young people in the Kingdom. Through a range of projects it seeks opportunities to encourage and empower young people’s talents and creativity.
The TNYC focuses on four key branches of work, one of which is the Business and Profit Oriented Division. Through this branch, Oxfam has assisted the TNYC in expanding the Future Organic Farm of Tonga (FOFT) group as an income generating business, focusing on the production of virgin coconut oil.
