Tapa Beater (Ike or Ta Tutu)
Four sides: three sides with carved grooves and one side smooth. Handle cylindrical shape.
The grooved faces of the wooded tapa beater or Ike) were origionally used to spread the bast, while the plain faces were used to smooth and finish it. Many Tongan ike conform to a standard shape, that is, the handle is more or less cylindrical, whereas the beating end, about two-thirds of its length, is square in cross section. The beating surfaces, which become broader towards the end, are groved on three sides and smooth on one. Approximately 30cm in length and 7cm wide on beathing surfaces
