Maui Kisikisi
A Tongan hero who was said to have fished up Tonga and other islands from the sea. He was born deformed at birth and his mother wrapped him with her hair and threw him to the sea, because Maui's elder brothers did not like him, however Maui survived and grew up in another far away island where he was raised by another couple until in he was a grown man and he then found his way back to his home in Tonga.
Maui Kisikisi was said to beat and snare the sun and anchored it to the sea like a kite so day time is set instead of the sun disappearing at random during the day and people afraid and can't complete their task.
Maui was also credited with cooking when he fought one of the Gods to bring fire to earth for the people cooking. Before that people eat their food raw.
Among many feats and slaying of demons and evils and fighting with the gods for the benefit of mankind, Maui's greatest wish was to obtain immortality for mankind by killing the goddess of death.
In his most dangerous expedition he travel with his friend, a little bird, to the dwelling place of Hinenuitepo, the goddess of death in the mountains. He entered her through her private parts to dismember her intestinal organs but his friend , Elepaio, the bird, could not contain his laughter and Hinenuitepo awoke and Maui was crushed to death.
Therefore Maui failed in his greatest wish to make mankind live for ever.
Maui Kisikisi in Tongan literally means Mother-calling-dragonfly. The couple that found and raised him said that Maui always called for his mother in his sleep and pretended to be a little dragonfly, so that he would be able to fly home to his family.
